About
Who am I?
Just a web designer, tackling the problems of marketing and communication in an increasingly complex and disconnected world.
It’s fascinating to me that the very tools that are making the world smaller and that connect us in new and amazing ways, are the same tools making us disconnect from others and ourselves. The very thing that makes it possible to have a video chat and connect with someone on the other side of the globe, is the same thing that can keep you sequestered playing World of Warcraft and never leaving the house. Having a friend you’ve never met is an oxymoron that makes perfect sense in the world of MySpace or Facebook. Cell phones make us reachable anytime or anywhere, but how many of us now would rather send a text message than deal with the discomfort of a phone call?
This is my blog. I write about the things that I find interesting and I try to be entertaining about it. Some of the things I like to write about…
Cosmic Irony
“The first people had the questions, and they were free. The second people had answers, and they became enslaved.”
- Wind Eagle Modern Indian Medicine Woman
A teacher once told me that you spend the first few years of your life learning the rules, and the rest of your life trying to reconcile the inconsistencies. You learn early on that it’s wrong to lie, then you find out not only that everyone lies, but that lying is useful and necessary in many situations. “No honey those jeans don’t make you’re ass look fat.”
Inconsistency drives me nuts, but it’s all around us. I believe the decisions we have in life aren’t black or white, or right or wrong… life is something in the middle. Life is ridiculous, life is absurd. I believe life is also Absurd by the way.
Marketing and Advertising
“When you stare long into the abyss, the abyss also stares into you. “
-Nietzsche
I’m not so interested in marketing and advertising methods. What does interest me are the underlying narratives in these communications, and what they say about our culture.
As the largest consumer of goods and services in the world, the United States is also the most marketing savvy culture on the planet. We know so well the techniques that marketers and advertisers use to “get us,” but don’t be so sure this means you can’t be gotten.
